After being diagnosed with Hepatitis C, many patients are overwhelmed with questions about their condition.
Here are some of the most commonly asked questions and their respective answers.
Please keep in mind, however, that these answers are generalizations only and it is important to discuss your concerns with your doctor.
Every patient is different and treatment is personalized to meet the needs of each individual.
I feel fine. Why should I get treated?
You may be infected with the virus but not show any symptoms for many years when the liver's function is compromised.
If treatment is implemented BEFORE the liver is adversly affected, the treatment is more likely to be successful and the damage done by the virus on the liver will be minimized.
Is it true that the treatment makes you sick?
As with many medications, there are several possible side effects to taking the necessary medications to treat HCV.
Fortunately, there are also many ways to counter these side effects and help you deal with them effectively.
Together, we will help you find coping strategies to deal with these possible issues on an individual basis.
I'm scared about having this infection and getting treated for it. Is there anyone that I can talk to?
Both Dr. Steingart and our nurse, Martine, will be more than happy to deal with all of your concerns.
They will take whatever time you need to explain the nature of the infection, treatment options, strategies for dealing with possible side effects, and whatever other concerns you may have.
If you need individualized counselling or treatment, we will be more than happy to get you the help you need.
We also have several patients who have been through the treatment process that have offered to talk to new patients about their concerns.
Use the Contact Us page and we will get you in touch with these volunteers.
